Sept. 2, 1989: Having not beaten an SMU team in over a decade, Rice beats the Mustangs 35-6 in Dallas ending an 18-game losing streak. Owls quarterback Donald Hollas throws for 222 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 82 yards and two touchdowns. The Mustangs, returning after two years of not having a football program, started 18 freshmen and only had 41 scholarship players.
