Sept. 13, 1986: For the first time since 1934, a new Notre Dame head coach loses in his debut, as Lou Holtz and the Irish fall to Michigan 24-23 in South Bend. ND quarterback Steve Beuerlein completes 21- 33 for 263 yards, breaking Joe Thiesmann's record for career passing yards in front of a capacity crowd (59,075). Although Notre Dame is unranked in the preseason for the first time in 22 years, Holtz and company appear in the Top 20 the following week despite their loss to the Wolverines.
