Dec. 4, 1988: Oklahoma State's Barry Sanders (2003 College Football Hall of Fame inductee) receives the news that he has won the 1988 Heisman Trophy prior to a stellar rushing performance in a 45-42 defeat of Texas Tech in Tokyo, Japan. Sanders rushes 44 times for 332 yards and four touchdowns, setting the NCAA single-season rushing record with 2,628 yards in 11 games.

This Date in College Football History
Oct. 10, 1987: Oklahoma State opens its season with five straight wins for the first time since 1945, beating Colorado 42-17 in Stillwater. Cowboys' Thurman Thomas (future College Football Hall of Famer) rushes for 110 yards and a touchdown, while Barry Sanders (another future College Football Hall of Famer) adds a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown.
