Nov. 13, 1982: Undefeated SMU uses a “throwback” lateral on a kickoff with 17 seconds left on the clock to stay undefeated at 10-0, edging Texas Tech 34-27 in the “Miracle on Fourth Avenue” in Lubbock. Deep receiver Blane Smith “bobbles” the final return and then lateraled across the field to Bobby Leach, who returned the kick 91 yards officially as time expired. The Mustangs go on to finish 11-0-1 and No. 2 in the final polls.
