Freshman Spotlight: Big East: Jonathan Baldwin

By Brian Vornberg

In the world of college football, it’s not often that you find a 5-star rated tight end prospect. Heck, even the 5-star receivers are hard to come by. But this year was different. Jonathan Baldwin, a tight end prospect out of Aliquippa, PA, proved that tight ends deserve some serious attention.

Baldwin, who was selected to play in this past January’s Army All-American game in San Antonio, Texas, is not just a multi-dimensional tight end, but a multi-dimensional all around player. In fact, in that same All-American game, Baldwin caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from Alabama quarterback to be Star Jackson with outstretched arms that was so reminiscent of Larry Fitzgerald, it was almost scary. The guy’s paws are enormous. He could have chosen basketball just as easily as he chose football, but football is obviously Baldwin’s passion (he was first team all-state in Pennsylvania for basketball as well). He also could have gone to schools with storied histories like Miami, Florida, USC, or Michigan. However, he stayed close to home and will add more talent to Dave Wannstedt’s already stellar recruiting class.

In addition to the potential to dominate in the red zone at 6'6" and 233 pounds, Baldwin also possesses 4.4-speed and the ability to get open. Jeremy Crabtree, an analyst for Rivals.com, said that Baldwin is “one of the top athletes in the country.” He reminds football fans of a faster Martin Rucker, the former Missouri tight end who will now play on Sundays. Baldwin is also a vastly underrated blocker, a rarity for most tight ends entering the college football ranks these days.

Keep in mind, there is a lot of pressure being placed on Baldwin to come in and perform as evidenced by the early comparisons to Larry Fitzgerald, probably the best Pitt wide receiver of all-time. He does have a couple of really good veteran wide receivers around him to help ease the transition and if talking to him as I did in San Antonio is any indication of his true character, he’ll handle the pressure just fine. Big East defensive backs, beware.

Freshman Spotlight: Big 12 Tramain Swindall

By Brian Vornberg

It's not that often that you'll see the Red Raiders going into the state of Oklahoma to pick out a prized recruit. In 2007, it was different.

Tramain Swindall came to Texas Tech as one of the star recruits of their 2007 class. With a plethora of receivers last season, the rangy 6'2, 175-pound receiver out of Oklahoma City decided to redshirt. Now he's ready to get onto the field in Lubbock.

Swindall came out of high school with less hype than the other receivers from the '07 class, but he certainly possesses all the tools needed to fit in right away in Mike Leach's pass-happy offense. He finished his high school career with 73 receptions and 1,702 yards (24-yard avg.) over his final two years to go along with 22 touchdowns. Not only was Swindall an exceptional receiver, he was also an excellent defensive back at Millwood High. His ended his high school career with a game-winning interception in the Oklahoma state title game with 30 seconds left and the opposing team driving.

In 2007, Rivals.com rated Swindall as the No. 54 wide receiver in the country and the No. 5 player out of Oklahoma. Somewhat surprisingly, the receiver chose the Red Raiders over others such as Kansas State, Missouri and Texas A&M.

His biggest asset will undoubtedly be his big, soft hands and his leaping ability. Swindall also adjusts very well to the ball while it's in the air.

If anyone is questioning Swindall's loyalty to his new program, he certainly answered those questions immediately. Swindall showed his pride for Tech, sporting the Red Raider's logo shaved into the side of his head during that memorable state championship game after his teammates all agreed to get Mohawks if they made it that far.

When asked about his anticipation of joining the Red Raider team, Swindall stated, "I'm very excited. They're losing receivers, so I'm going to have a chance to play. But if not, just being in Lubbock and a part of that pass-oriented offense is exciting." I'm fairly certain that for head coach Mike Leach and his pass-oriented offense, the feeling is mutual.

2009 SMALL SCHOOL SEVEN ROUND MOCK DRAFT

BY JOSH BUCHANAN- NFL DRAFT BIBLE/COLLEGE FOOTBALL INSIDERS

Be sure to check back throughout the season as we will be updating periodically and adding extended player profiles.

GUIDLINES

1. 2008 NFL Draft order was used with all teams getting original picks and comp picks taken out.
2. Selections based off how teams drafted and signed rookie free agents this past year.
3. Transfers, players coming off injury, and those with known baggage dropped 1-2 rounds lower than generally expected.

ROUND ONE

1- 1- 1 Miami- OT/OG Cornelius Lewis, Tennessee State, 6’3 3/8, 316, 5.10E
Lewis is an athletic tackle who could move to guard and fill two holes on the line. His coaches are very high on his ability and while this is a bit of a reach, it helps them fill their biggest need.

1- 2- 2 St. Louis- WR Ramses Barden, Cal Poly, 6’6, 220, 4.60E
Barden fills a need for the Rams and gives them great size out on the edge. His production (3-time 1st team All-Great West) and ability to block kicks on special teams make him even more attractable to teams. He is the #1 player on my board and a potential franchise player.

1- 3- 3 Atlanta- QB Nathan Brown, Central Arkansas, 6’1 ¼, 210, 4.80E
Brown does have a ¾ sidearm delivery teams worry about but he is smart, a good leader, can make all the throws, and is fairly mobile. The 2007 SLC OFF POY has all the tools to become a solid playmaker at the NFL level.

1- 4- 4 Oakland- WR Quinten Lawrence, McNeese State, 5’11 5/8, 182, 4.35
At 6’0, 182 and 4.3 speed he brings the ideal combination the Raiders are looking for. His athletic ability will allow him to play CB, WR, and RS this year. As a 3-time All SLC selection he has also shown consistency in his career.

1- 5- 5 Kansas City- RB Rashad Jennings, Liberty, 6’1, 230, 4.49
Jennings might be considered a reach when Brian Mandeville is on the board and many scouts have him rated much lower but his size/speed combo is too good to pass up. He is a great player to build around both on and off the field.

1- 6- 6 New York Jets- TE Brian Mandeville, Northeastern, 6’6, 248, 4.78
Mandeville, a former DE, brings great size and athletic ability as well as upside to the TE position. Expect him to only get better as time goes on and potentially end up a steal at this point. He is quite possibly the best small school prospect on the board.

1- 7- 7 San Francisco- DT John Faletoese, UC Davis, 6’1 ½, 295, 5.05E
His talent is unquestionable as he earned 1st team All-Great West honors each of his first two years before injuries slowed him down last year. His quickness allows him to run plays down from behind and motor makes him tough to block. If he can stay healthy his stock could rise even further.

1- 8- 8 Baltimore- TE Marquez Branson, Central Arkansas, 6’2 ¼, 247, 4.60E
Branson burst onto the FCS scene last year after transferring from East Mississippi CC and earned 2nd team All-SLC honors with 37 catches for 499 yards. He is an athletic player who probably moves to h-back in the NFL.

1- 9- 9 Cincinnati- OT Nicholas Hennessey, Colgate, 6’5 3/8, 296, 5.31
The Bengals go after the top player on the board and fill a need for depth. He brings good size and great feet but still raw. He is not a mauler but more of a finesse player who can reach players and cut them off very well. Many feel he was underrated as only a 2nd team All-Patriot League selection last year.

1-10-10 New Orleans- CB Domonique Johnson, Jackson State, 6’1, 5/8, 184, 4.39
He has the most impressive size/speed combo of any CB in this draft and could be a high riser just like DRC was last year. Johnson, a Missouri transfer, started 4 games before transferring and had a great junior campaign with 5 interceptions and 14 pass breakups. There are some past injury issues but they appear to be gone now. If he is healthy and continues his improvement this could be a huge steal as the 10th small schooler off the board.

1-11-11 Buffalo- CB Sean Smalls, UMASS, 6’0 ¼, 201, 4.60
Smalls lacks great top end speed but brings great size and consistent play to the table. He is a player who could rise up the draft board if he can get his 40 in the mid to low 4.5 range. He is a 2-time All CAA selection who had 10 breakups last year. He has great skills and upside to go with it.

1-12-12 Denver- WR Jeremy Gilchrist, Hampton, 5’8 ¾, 171, 4.57
Yes Gilchrist lacks ideal size and just average speed at this point but it is believed that 4.57 will drop to the mid 4.4s by the end of the year. He does play faster than 4.5 as shown in his explosive play as a punt returner and receiver. He finished with 69 catches for 1,043 yards and returned 3 punts for TDs last year.

1-13-13 Carolina- OG Louis West, Henderson State, 6’7 ¼, 375, 5.40E
Carolina has lacked an ideal running in the past and decides to fill a void with the very huge West from Henderson State. His outstanding size and style of play fits exactly what the Panthers could use. The former Pasadena JC transfer was an immediate star in the GSC last year by earning 2nd team all league honors. Look for even bigger things, no pun intended, out of West in 2008.

1-14-14 Chicago- RB Bernard Scott, Abilene Christian, 5’10 ½, 197, 4.55
Scott is a little older as he will turn 25 before the draft but he brings great production and downhill running style that teams love. He will have to improve his blocking but has the potential to become a complete back. Regardless of his age you can’t ignore 2,165 rushing yards and 35 TDs in one season.

1-15-15 Detroit- OLB Lee Robinson, Alcorn State, 6’2 1/8, 246, 4.60E
Robinson somehow got snubbed for All SWAC honors last year despite posting 82 tackles and 14 tackles for loss. He brings good size and speed to go along with the ability to play sideline to sideline. He is a hard hitter who the coaches love and his endurance has heavily improved. Expect big things from him this year and a potential rise up the board.

1-16-16 Arizona- OT Joel Bell, Furman, 6’7 ¼, 308, 5.20E
Bell has mammoth size and good feet for his size. His dominance in the SoCon has been proven by earning 1st team All SoCon as a junior and 2nd team as a sophomore.

1-17-17 Minnesota- DT Sammie Lee Hill, Stillman, 6’3 7/8, 321, 5.15
Hill is a highly athletic physical specimen who has great leaping ability for his size. The 2007 1st team All SIAC selection posted 52 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks last year. He brings great upside and could be a dominant plugger with time. One thing many don’t know about Hill is that he helped pull a man from a burning house in August of 2007.

1-18-18 Houston- OT Samuel Allen, Grand Valley State, 6’5 ½, 300, 5.06
He earned HM All GLIAC honors at LT last year after starting all 15 games at LT in 2005. He brings athletic ability and upside. He only weighed 280 during the spring but has gained 20 pounds and is back to where he weighed during last year.

1-19-19 Philadelphia- OLB Jason Williams, Western Illinois, 6’1 1/8, 235, 4.54
Williams would have gone in the top 10 had he been an inch or two taller but where he lacks ideal height he more than makes up for it with great speed. He is an explosive player who constantly wreaks havoc in the backfield. He earned AFCA All America honors after posting 107 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, and 8 sacks last year.

1-20-20 Tampa Bay- OT Ben Coblyn, UMASS, 6’6 3/8, 305, 5.06
Coblyn has yet to start a game at UMASS and would be a huge reach here at this point but brings superior athletic ability and could end up being a steal. He is a pure boom or bust player who has little football experience but brings great feet and quickness due to his basketball background. The sky is the limit for Coblyn.

1-21-21 Washington- TE Jared Bronson, Central Washington, 6’4 1/8, 253, 4.67
Bronson, a former Washington and Pima CC transfer, is an athletic kid who can block well. He earned 1st team All NCC honors as a junior last year after coming off a medical redshirt in ’06. He caught 35 balls for 477 yards and should improve on those numbers in 2008. He also gives the Redskins a potential threat that brings the total package.

1-22-22 Cleveland- WR Johnny Knox, Abilene Christian, 5’11 5/8, 183, 4.50
Knox transferred from Tyler JC and burst onto the D2 scene with 62 catches for 1,158 yards and 17 touchdowns last year. He brings good speed and quickness and gives them a solid slot receiver who can return kickoffs as well.

1-23-23 Pittsburgh- C Cecil Newton, Tennessee State, 6’1 ½, 292, 5.20E
Newton lacks great upside but is a solid blocker who can long snap and brings a great work ethic. He is also quick for his size. He is one of the best centers in the FCS ranks and a much underrated player by the media.

1-24-24 Tennessee- RB Javarris Williams, Tennessee State, 5’9 3/8, 218, 4.55
Williams is a no brainer due to location of the school and the fact they need a change of pace back for depth. Williams is a 2-time All OVC selection who ran for 1,187 yards and 12 touchdowns on 6.1ypc last year. He gives them a total package type of player here.

1-25-25 Seattle- RB Branden Ore, West Liberty State, 5’11, 205, 4.48
This is a potential steal here. Ore’s drop is purely due to off field issues but his talent is probably the best of any player in the draft. The former 1st team All-ACC selection gives them a great player who can replace Shaun Alexander very well after his release.

1-26-26 Jacksonville- CB Lardarius Webb, Nicholls State, 5’10 7/8, 173, 4.50E
Webb is an athletic player who excels both on special teams and on defense. The former Southern Miss transfer is an explosive player who is a front runner for the Buck Buchanan Award. His production and versatility makes him an intriguing prospect but his move from SS to CB and lack of ideal size is the cause of a drop from what many thought was a top 5 selection among this group.

1-27-27 San Diego- OG Roger Allen, Missouri Western, 6’3 1/8, 318, 5.30E
Allen has a mean streak and brings good strength to the guard position. A 2-time 1st team All MIAA selection, he has shown dominance and consistency throughout his career but has potential to rise up boards if he can show he doesn’t slack off on lesser opponents like he has done in the past.

1-28-28 Dallas- TE Robbie Agnone, Delaware, 6’5 3/8, 256, 4.80E
Agnone is a great pass catching threat who gives Dallas whose numbers might decrease with the loss of Flacco and thus could make him a steal as he might drop. His hands, size, and ability to stretch the seam make him a mismatch that most in the FCS can’t guard.

1-29-29 Indianapolis- QB Rhett Bomar, Sam Houston State, 6’2 ¼, 212, 4.75E
Bomar does have off field issues and that is the reason he drops to 29. Although without them he is not eligible as he would have never left Oklahoma. He only threw for 10 touchdowns last year but it was not due to his talent.

1-30-30 Green Bay- QB Mike Reilly, Central Washington, 6’2 ¾, 211, 4.75
Reilly brings a strong arm and consistency to the pocket and a gun slinging mentality. He is a 3-time all conference selection who threw for 3,386 yards and 30 touchdowns last year. He needs to work on staring down receivers and giving away his intentions at times but has the tools to be a solid QB.

1-31-31 New England- QB Chris Pizzotti, Harvard, 6’5 3/8, 224, 4.95
Pizzotti is a strong armed pocket passer who reminds some of Matt Ryan. After receiving a rare 5th year of eligibility in the Ivy League he is expected to be among the top small school passers this season. He has improved greatly over the last two years and could be a top 15 pick by the end of the year.

1-32-32 New York Giants- WR Willie Edwards, Bethany KS, 6’1 ¾, 4.60E
Edwards got into some trouble UAB but since then he has changed those he is around and is working very hard. He does lack return abilities but is a solid blocker and is great at fade, dig, and comeback routes. His size and hands make him a solid pick at this point.
